Most dog age calculators are wrong
For decades, dog owners have been told that one dog year equals seven human years. This rule came from a simple calculation — dividing an average human lifespan of 70 years by an average dog lifespan of 10 — and modern veterinary science has proven it's simply not accurate.
The old myth
A 1-year-old dog is not like a 7-year-old child. That number ignores breed, size, and the fact that dogs mature far faster in their first two years than any fixed multiplier can capture.
The real picture
A 1-year-old dog is actually like a 15-year-old human teenager — fully grown and entering adulthood. A 2-year-old dog is like a 24-year-old human. After that, aging rate depends heavily on size.
Small dogs age slower — a Chihuahua can live 16 years. Large dogs age faster — a Great Dane often lives only 7 to 10 years. Most online calculators ignore this. We built one that doesn't.

Published in Cell Systems, this study measured DNA changes in 104 Labradors aged 4 weeks to 16 years to produce the formula: Human Age = 16 × ln(Dog Age) + 31.

Before writing a single line of code, I went through the AKC breed standards, AVMA senior-care guidelines, and the UC San Diego epigenetic clock study so the numbers here would actually hold up.
